Friends in low places – Shark?

“From the briny deep. Songs soaked in ocean mist. business in the front, rows and rows of razor sharp teeth in the back. vague and unsettling. perpetual forward motion. or death”…

Their words not mine, but anyhow in a parallel universe Shark? just might be the coolest band in New York at the moment.

shark?

While the rest of the world wonders what Julian Casablancas’ new haircut will be like Shark?, have a new single coming out in February that will be so hot, you probably won’t even be able to get a copy of it …AND an album full of dynamite to hit the shelves in 2011.

Flush the Fashion spoke to the greatest Kevin in popular music since er, erm.. ahh… Kevin Rowland from Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Kevin Diamond and found out sometimes it’s not all sex, drugs and rock n’ roll.

What are you up to at this very moment?
I am at home watching Sports Center, posting YouTube Videos to my Facebook page (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pScdRKsGFr0), and eating cookies. It’s pretty sweet.

Who is in the band?
Andy “Swerd” Swerdlow, Andy “Kinsey” Kinsey, Chris “Muggs” Mulligan, and myself, Kevin “Myself” Diamond.

How long have you been together?
We were always together. Our pants are attached at the seems. We’ve only been playing shows for about a year and a half though.

Is there a full length album on the way?

We just finished recording with Pere Ubu bassist Tony Maimone producing. We mix in January, then we’ll be looking to release it before the summer.

Your sound is very ‘garagey’, do you think that would change in a big studio?

We purposefully recorded all our basics live to tape to avoid loosing that “Garagey” or what have you sound. The album has lots of bells and whistles but it’s anything but clean and bland. We want it to be fun, messy, loud, but also be full of bits of ear candy. The album has Hammond organ, upright piano, glockenspiel, and more.

What producer would you like to work with?

Tony was amazing to work with. Who else? Phil Spector, but only if we recorded in jail.

Who are your musical heroes and influences?
Mostly Cheap Trick.

Who gets the most groupies in the band?
We had a stuffed hammer head shark that we brought on stage with us for all our shows. Until one night, a drank guy grabbed him, stuffed him down his pants, and left. That’s the most action any of us ever gets.

What song do you like playing live the best?
The one we write on the spot when someone breaks a string and we need to waste some time.

If you weren’t in Shark, what would you be doing, do you have any other ‘skills’ ?

I got skills to pay the bills! You should see me dance.

What have you got planned for 2011?
We’re touring the country on our way to SXSW, we’ve got a 7″ coming out in February on Oops Baby Records, we’re looking for someone to release our full length record by June. That’s just the first half of the year.

Where should we go for lunch next time we are in Brooklyn?
My house, I’ll make you a mean Quesadilla.

So there you have it. Next time you’re in New York look them up, and if you’re hungry even better! And if you were the one who put the shark down your pants, please send it back (washed).
