Music: Ones to Watch – TULIPS

tulips-Doom & Bloom

Whether L.A.-based band, TULIPS draw directly from the classic girl groups of the 60’s (The Shangri-las, The Ronettes, The Crystals, etc.) or indirectly from those they inspired (Detroit Cobras, Best Coast, Dum Dum Girls, etc.) the musical partnership of Angie Bloom (vox/guitar) and Taleen Kali (vox/guitar) is yielding beautiful California noise pop inspired by of all of the above on Doom & Bloom.

Mixed by Brad Laner (of Shoegaze legends, Medicine fame) TULIPS’ debut is at times more summery and bouncy while other times, the vibe is a bit aggro – more punked up and fuzzed out, but the songs are always fun and catchy as hell. Cooing and crooning with bright guitars or whooping and wailing with feedback and barre chords, the L.A. foursome (Miles Faster on bass and Travis Moore on drums flesh out the still raw and raucous sound) make a tuneful din with warm melodies and classic lines worthy of anytime listening.
