Adnams has to be one of the best breweries in the UK, and one of the benefits of living in Norfolk is you’re never too far away from a pub that sells Adnams Beer on tap.

We spoke to Fergus Fitzgerald the Head Brewer at the Adnams Brewery in beautiful Southwold, Suffolk to find out more…

What is the secret to a good beer?
Good Beer? Needs water, malted barley, hops, yeast, a few vessels to brew in and people who care passionately about how the beer tastes.

It helps if they can simultaneously be excited by the essential treadmill of consistency and the chaos of experimenting…. It also helps to be able to able to see a lighthouse from the brewery.

No one beer is right for everybody, but there will be one for everyone. For me a good beer balances the aroma and bitterness of the hops with the sweetness and body of the barley and leaves room for the yeast to show a little of it’s own character.

What new Beers do Adnams have in the pipeline?
As well as the current (and delicious) Oyster Stout we have an American IPA for February in cask and returning later in the year in bottle.

We’re bringing out a Mild for March. For us it’s a resurrection of a style of beer that was the cornerstone of the brewery for most of the 20th century. It went out of fashion in the late 20th century but is coming back again.

We are also doing a Honey beer for April to coincide with the Royal wedding and we did a beer called Ghost Ship last year using some a fantastic hop variety called Citra which went really well so we are bringing it back this year for a bit longer from June to October. It was inspired by a 600-year-old haunted pub, called The Bell.

As well as having its own resident ghost, The Bell is in one of England’s most haunted villages, Walberswick, in Suffolk where George Orwell famously spotted the spectre of a small stooping man, prompting a lifelong interest in ghosts. (After that it’s not clear whether he also pursued a life long interest in drinking)
