On the Radar: Young Buffalo

Young Buffalo started making music when the friends from Oxford, Mississippi were still at school. Now, just into their twenties, the band are making a name for themselves on both sides of the Atlantic.

Young Buffolo

Their first UK single ‘Caterpilah’ (released earlier this year) is a rollicking tune. It begins with a whoop from singer Jim Barrett and is propelled energetically forward through the combination of Barrett’s rhythm guitar and Ben Yarbrough’s rapid percussion.

Strong vocal harmonies are a signature of the band, and both young men alternate as lead vocalists on different songs. After the third original member (keyboardist/bassist Alex Von Hardberger) left the band Young Buffalo play live as a four-piece and they have marked their relaunch with a new track, ‘Baby Demons’ (see below).

This song sees the band experimenting with their sound. The track is still driven by the combination of guitars and percussion but the vocals have been layered with the guitar melody to create a slightly fuzzy, psychedelic feel.

Young Buffalo’s enthusiasm to experiment and define their place within the current climate is exciting and they have decided to make ‘Baby Demons’ available via their Bandcamp page in a ‘pay what you want’ deal.

It’s certainly worth checking out as their musicianship belies their years. A highly recommended band on the up.
