To celebrate Cuban Fury’s release into UK cinemas today we’re having a look at some of Britain’s comedy gold…
Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Widely recognised as one of the top cult comedy films ever made, Shaun of the Dead stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as two friends who have to fight off a zombie apocalypse together. The first film in the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, it received wide-spread critical acclaim including praise from Stephen King and Quentin Tarantino. SOTD Fact: They filmed The Winchester pub scenes in a real pub down my old road in New Cross. Is now converted into flats (see here)
Hot Fuzz (2007)
Shaun of the Dead was followed up with cop comedy Hot Fuzz. Again starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, this outrageous tale follows pro police officer Nicholas Angel as he is transferred from London to a small crimeless town after making his colleagues look bad. Part two of the so-called ‘Cornetto’ series.
Withnail & I (1987)
This twisted black comedy tells the story of two young, struggling actors and their plight as they attempt a holiday in the English countryside. Featuring the delusional alcoholic Withnail, and the never-named, ever anxious “I” this uncomfortably hilarious comedy will have you in painful stitches.
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
Four Weddings and a Funeral is a British romantic comedy directed by Mike Newell and written by Richard Curtis. The film follows the adventures of a group of friends through the eyes of Charles who is played by Hugh Grant who falls in love with Andie MacDowell’s character Carrie who they continually keep bumping into each other at weddings and a funeral.
