The Mel-bourne Identity

Husky – The Woods Tour, The Corner Hotel
After their discovery on Triple J’s Unearthed competition four-piece Husky, back from their soiree at the infamous SXSW festival, ended their Woods Tour in front of a doting hometown Melbourne crowd. The Corner has been a bit of second home to me since moving to the hood and many a time I’ve had the pleasure of hearing new and local artists. This was similar, but a little more special.

The band is made up of Husky on vocals and guitar, Gideon (swoooon) on keys and vocals, Evan twanging on bass and vocals, and of course Luke providing the essential drums. The band wooed me with their delicate and profound harmonies with Husky on lead, Gideon providing the high register and Evan suitably on bass(vocals).

Their sound is the kind of music you want to wake up to on a Sunday morning, overlooking some sort of nautical vista, coffee in hand, and the memories of the night before swimming in your mind. Too much? Nah.

They reminded me of the likes of Fleet Foxes, The Villagers and Grizzly Bear. These guys put a lot into the actual music behind their lyrics which really makes them stand out – Gideon for example received a whooping applause just for his prelude keys solo to ‘The Woods’.

Not surprising then that they’ve just been signed by record label Sub Pop, for many years the flag bearers of the indie-folk/grunge/melodic genre. For more info visit www.huskysongs.com
