It wasn’t so long ago that I would’ve taken an aspirational video like this one from Reebok with a rather large pinch of salt. Now I’ve got to the stage (and age) where I think the more kids (and adults) can be encouraged to take part in exercise (any sort of exercise) the better.
I bit the bullet and joined a gym last year and although I’m not as hard-core as the demi-gods and goddesses in the video above, it feels great to be somewhere on the right side of healthy as apposed to somewhere down the back of the couch with a packet of crisps and a can of coke.
Since joining, I’ve met some inspirational characters, one of them is seventy-eight years old, he goes five days a week, starting off early with a ‘Spinning’ class at 6:30am. If you didn’t know, ‘Spinning’ is something that involves riding an exercise bike as fast as humanely possible until you can feel your legs burning, then resting then doing it again. In other words, premeditated madness.
He reckons he covers about 16 miles every class, which is pretty good going for any age if you ask me. He looks about 20 years younger than he is and I sometimes chat with him just after his Sauna session and his dip in the pool. He says going to the gym was the best thing he ever did as in addition to the fitness, it also keeps him sharp mentally.
I tend to agree with him, well so far, so good anyway. I’ll keep you posted on that one.
