We’re right in the middle of London Fashion Week and the worlds fashion-istic movers and shakers are descending upon the capital to drink complimentary Prosecco and fight that all-important catwalk front row seat.
One place that’s buzzing (especially during Fashion week) is ‘M by Montcalm’, the 269-roomed Hotel opened late last year and style-wise represents a change of scene for the Montcalm brand. It’s entirely possible that the ‘M’ stands for ‘modern’ as they’ve put slick design and technology top of the list of priorities.
For instance, all rooms have funky computer tablet controls for the lighting, curtains, air-con etc. Thankfully it’s all very user-friendly and even the most Zoolander of models attending should work it out without resorting to Blue Steel .
The rooms are finished in calming blacks and greys, contrasted with stylish pastel leather furniture and cool mood strip lighting along the ceiling. As you would expect from a new five star hotel the bathrooms are immaculate and full of complimentary products. Especially good is the rain-style shower which, after a late night of canopies, cocktails and haute couture is completely reinvigorating.
Breakfast at ‘M by Montcalm’ isn’t just coffee and a stale croissant, the buffet style set up is more than enough to keep you going all day and there’s an impressive selection of full-english (including black pudding), healthy bio-yoghurts, pastries, fresh fruit. Or if you’re a size zero I can thoroughly recommend their cappuccino’s too (see below).
Situated just a stones throw from Old Street tube station and opposite Moorfields Eye Hospital, my tenth floor room has brilliant views across the city. Time restraints mean I don’t have the chance to experience any of the delights available at the Spa, but there are a range of treatments available, not to mention a small, but perfectly formed indoor swimming pool.
If you’re around in the evening the restaurant ‘Tonic and Remedy‘ has an excellent reputation and I’m told just as busy with locals as it is with guests at the Hotel.
For all it’s modern tech and stylish offerings, perhaps surprisingly the one thing I felt from my stay at ‘M by Montcalm’ was a sense of tranquility. For a Hotel so close to the hustle and bustle of the big smoke, that is something that definitely won’t go out of fashion in a hurry.
