Sony’s new flagship phone for this year is the Xperia Z2, packing in plenty of power in a phone that’s just 8.2 mm thick. The Z2 will offer up a 5.2-inch display which operates at a resolution of 1920 x 1080, or ‘full HD’. Sony are planning on using the phone as a way of getting people to upgrade their home TV too, as the phone’s 20.7 megapixel camera will be able to capture 4K video at a ludicrously high 3840 x 2160 resolution. The phone is released in April.
The much anticipated new version of the highly popular Galaxy phone is rumoured to be unleashed globally in the next couple of weeks. Launched at the Mobile World Congress in February, the new Galaxy comes complete with a 5-inch display, super speed octa-core processor and the brand new Android 4.4 KitKat operating system. The Galaxy S5 promises to be a high spec handset which will come in a normal plastic model or an all-metal case with a flexible screen. Another Samsung phone but one with a big difference. Tizen is a brand new operating system for mobiles, developed by Samsung and Intel, as an alternative to Android. It is rumoured that Tizen will allow for more app innovation and thousands of apps will be available as soon as the handsets appear. Samsung are planning a high-end and budget Tizen-powered phone for 2014, so keep an eye out for more announcements.
With the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C appearing last year, most analysts are suggesting the new numbered model will arrive in June 2014. With new size variants, a large storage facility, increased battery life, a 13-megapixel camera, and even wireless charging, the iPhone 6 will mark a premium leap forward for Apple as they try to compete with Samsung.
The follow-up to the disappointing HTC One will appear in 2014, and word is that the phone will run off a powerful Snapdragon chip, come with Android 4.4 KitKat, have a 5-inch screen, and boast 16GB of memory and a 4-megapixel camera. It won’t be as premium as the Samsungs or the iPhone, but it will certainly pack a punch for the mid-market. So there’s our rundown of the top 5 phone releases in 2014.
