If you find yourself hungry when you are in the depths of the City, pop along to hidden gem One Under Lime, for some taste bud ticklers and sample their very impressive wine list.
Open from 8am, you can pop by for breakfast or coffee meets, with the lunch menu starting at 11.30. The tables are spaced enough to be exclusive so it’s the perfect place for an intimate bite, or for a more rawkus party after hours. With last dinner orders at 9pm, it beats getting home and cooking!
I visited One Under Lime, on a stormy Tuesday lunchtime, and eventually found it after a glitch with my Google maps. Hidden away under the Lloyds Bank building, you couldn’t get closer to the Banking District, but I didn’t spot too many “banky” types at my 2pm lunch.
I had to wait a few minutes for my table, so it’s well worth booking. But I was assured that when the sun shines, all the tables in the courtyard are available too, and it’s usually chocka with lunchtime drinkers and snackers!
And snack we did! I brought along a hungry dining companion and we started our feast with a Scotch Egg and olives. Perfect for sharing, but making us wistful for summer picnics!
The friendly waitress advised that there was a seasonal menu, and normally a barbeque (with 3 items from the BBQ, 3 salad items and 3 artisan breads for £15) on the terrace, but due to the unpredictable British weather, the great outdoors had been transformed into the chef’s interpretation of an indoor barbie, with an inventive burger inspired Specials menu.
I chose the smoked haddock fishcake, with spinach, poached egg and butter mustard sauce- it just screamed Comfort Food! And didn’t let me down. My companion also opted for fish and went for a slightly more healthy (and rather ample!!) pan-fried cod filet with crispy pancetta. With a side order of chunky chips and summer slaw to share!
I devoured my plate in no time, almost tempted to lick the remains of the sauce! Perhaps I would have done if I had managed another glass of wine! Chris, enjoyed his at a much slower pace, and in fact I ate more than his half of the chips too!
With a wallet friendly varied menu, this is the ideal place to pop in to for a drink, and stay and get some snacks- the menu lends itself to pick & mix nibbles. The ambience is buzzing, but not too loud, although we were informed that there was a DJ night once a month, which was getting a bit of a reputation for the area!
The airy and industrial interior is the perfect place for meetings, after work parties, or a catch up with your emails and a coffee, if I ever find myself in the City with a spare hour, I would definitely recommend One Under Lime for refreshments (but not on the weekend- it’s only open Monday- Friday).
