Why You Should See the Optician (Yes, Even If You Think You Can Still Read a Street Sign)

One of the jobs that often falls from the list for most people is going to the opticians. Dental appointments are up there, too, but that doesn’t mean that you should be missing those appointments. It’s somewhere up there with organizing the sock drawer or figuring out the decanting of washing powder – you just don’t want to!

However, an eye test is one of the easiest and most important things that you can do for your health and it’s not just about the possibility of needing prescription glasses. Eye tests can tell you a lot about your health, and so even when you think that you can read street signs, here’s why you need to turn up on time to the optician.

  • Your eyes change far more than you think. You may think that your vision is fine right now, but the reason you think it’s fine is because it’s what you’re used to. When was the last time you actually tested it? Eye changes happen gradually, so it’s easy to adapt without even realizing you’re even adapting. You could be straining your eyes without feeling the strain, but if you’ve noticed dry, tired eyes and headaches, it’s not just normal tiredness. This could be your eyes quietly asking you for some help.
  • Eye tests don’t just test your eyes. An eye test is not just about vision, there is so much you can tell from an eye test. Opticians can spot the signs of serious conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, glaucoma and even certain brain conditions and they can see this all through your eyes. Think of them as health detectives for your face. A 20 minute check up could genuinely save you from much bigger issues down the line, and that’s not so bad for something you can do on your lunch break.
  • You may be wearing the wrong glasses. If you’re already wearing glasses but your eyes haven’t been tested in a while, there is a good chance that your prescription has changed. When you wear outdated glasses, it’s like trying to text with a cracked screen. You can kind of get by, but it’s frustrating and it’s not very effective. With the right prescription glasses, you’ll be able to see better and you’ll reduce any eye strain while also improving your posture because you won’t be hunched forward trying to see the TV.
  • It’s also easy, and it’s worth it. With an eye test, there are no scary machines or tests that take all day. Modern eye exams are very straightforward and they’re over before you know it. Opticians often have stylish shops and lovely staff who actually make the whole process enjoyable. Plus, you’re going to walk out of there knowing that your eyes are in top shape and that Peace of Mind can be priceless.

If you’re busy prioritising your phone and your TV shows over your own health, that’s a problem. We’re living in a world where your eye health really does matter, and if you want to continue to see everything then you need to make sure that you have your eyes tested.
