The 3 Essentials To Getting Your First Eyeglass Prescription

It isn’t easy to make the adjustment from having perfect vision to suddenly not being able to see that well. Many people experience a decline in their vision as they get older. This means that at some point you are likely to have to get a prescription for glasses. It can be daunting for somebody who has never worn glasses but the benefits are enormous when you find the right prescription and glasses.

You just need to know what goes into getting a prescription for eyeglasses so there is no mystery surrounding it. Once you go through the process then you will be able to enjoy doing things that were starting to get difficult due to your declining vision. In this article, we will explain what the process is like when you need to get eyeglasses.

1 – Get a vision test

The first step in getting the right glasses is to get your vision checked. You have to determine if your vision is nearsighted or farsighted among other things.

You’ll need to be able to answer questions regarding the problems that you are having such as reading or when driving. This will give the doctor a guide on how to proceed. They will also want to know about any history of eye problems in your family to understand if your vision is a result of eye disease and even things like diabetes that can affect your vision.

Once the interview part of the exam is over they will begin the actual vision test. The first part of the test is familiar to just about everybody since it is the one where you stand in front of a chart and have to read off the letters until you can no longer see them clearly.

They will also test your peripheral vision and then use their equipment to test for glaucoma and even use a machine to photograph the back of the eye to the retina, the optic disk, and the layer of blood vessels.

2 – Get used to the glasses

The biggest issue that new eyeglass wearers have is how it is very foreign to have something on their faces that partially blocks the vision they are meant to help with.  The key is to pick glasses that are going to make it easier to wear.

For instance, you can get clear glasses that don’t block your view as much and are barely there. You’ll still see them somewhat but they won’t be as noticeable. The glasses should also be lightweight so that they don’t bother your nose or even cause headaches.

3 – Keep getting checked

Your vision is going to continue to change and your current prescription will one day be outdated. It’s important to get checked every two years or so to determine if your prescription needs to be changed.

If you notice that you are having trouble seeing before your scheduled routine checkup, go to an optician right away to get the prescription updated.
