The Guide To Spending More Than A Week Traveling

Spending more than a week traveling, whether you’re going from town to town within your own country or you’re looking to have a great adventure abroad, takes much more preparation and planning than a regular vacation. You’re going to be spending a lot more time away from home, and away from your friends, family, and your job, and that’s just too much for some people.

But spending as much time as you like away on your travels is key to a healthy and happy life. You’re going to be taking a much needed break, to really soak up the sun and the surroundings, and make lots of lovely new memories along the way. So you should be able to spend more than a week traveling, and with this handy little guide right here, we hope to help you structure out your itinerary.

Is Your Accommodation Comfortable Enough?

If you’re going to be spending more than 5 to 7 days away from home, you need to make sure that where you’re staying is comfortable enough for you. After all, staying in a hostel might be good in the short term, for things like overnight or 2 day stays, but for upwards of 10 days, you’re going to need a little more room and a little more comfort on your side.

You’re going to need to stay somewhere you can really settle in and spread out, and when you’re in a cramped 4 bunk bedroom in a small inner city hostel, that might not be the right place for you. You’ve got to get the rest of your traveling companions in there as well, after all, and communal showers might get a little old after a while. You need more privacy, when it’s day 10 and you’re running out of clean clothes to pull out of a suitcase, and you definitely need to be able to feel like you’ve got a home away from home.

So think about your accommodation options here. Think about the hotels you could spend a couple of nights in, and save some money by checking out and checking in to another hotel that’s just across town. Single night prices are a lot more manageable to handle than bundle hotel stay packages!

At the same time, you don’t have to rely solely on the more traditional forms of accommodation. Check out some more private places to stay, such as cheap singapore apartment rentals, if you’re going to be away for a very long period of time. Simply get yourself somewhere you can set up as your own little home for the time being.

Go Somewhere with Plenty to Do

You’re also going to need to plan to take a trip somewhere you know has lots to do. You need to be able to keep attention all through your travels, and when you’re visiting somewhere you’ve gone tens of times before, and you have nothing more to see or do there, you’re not going to feel refreshed or like you’ve had a lot of fun spending more than a week exploring its sights.

So make sure you’re headed off to a place you’ve never been to before, but you’ve wanted to see for a very long time now. Take a gamble that you’re going to enjoy yourself while you’re there, simply because it looks like a great place, and you’ve heard it talked about for years now.

And seeing as you’d love to get to know this place properly, and you’d love to find a good place to sit down and have breakfast in every morning, taking at least two weeks of your vacation time away is going to be absolutely amazing.

Packing the Right Amount of Money

Of course, if you’re going away for a longer period of time, it’s only natural that you’re going to need to take more than your usual amount of money with you. But how much exactly?

Well, if you’re not the kind of person who likes to have prepaid travel cards for your trips, or you’ve not got a debit or credit card that works just fine overseas, you’re going to need at least $50 per person for every day of your trip. Hopefully you can take nearer to $100 per person with you, but this method works just fine if you’re on a budget too.

When you’ve got an extra $50 to $100 per person for your extended vacation, you won’t have to sweat over the price of meals, or the extra hotel costs you may have to fork out for, and you definitely won’t have to leave behind that souvenir you’d really like to buy!

Security Tips for Protecting Your Home

Finally, if you’re going to be away for longer than 7 days, you’re going to need to think about your home back home. You’re going to need to up your security measures here, and if you don’t have a trusted neighbour or friend who can look in every now and then, it’s important to keep your property locked down at all times. Double-check locks before you go, and if you don’t have a security camera system, it might be wise to invest in one.

Investing in a good alarm system is always sensible and can serve as a deterrent. Reputable alarm companies can set sensors in your home which will trigger an alarm when they detect movement from a person. An alarm can also alert authorities to the intrusion, though this is dependent on the security company and service pack you go with.

Leave your home in a state you usually would when you’re out, such as when you go to the shops or when you’re picking up the kids from school. Light switch timers can flip the lights on for an hour or so a few times per week, to make it look like you’re still at home. Often it’s recommended that you close the curtains when you’re off on vacation, but if you don’t do that when you’re out and about normally, it could tip off potential criminals that something is going on with your home.

Spending more than a week going on your travels is easier to do than you think. Save up your vacation, and take some real time off, and really enjoy your time in a relaxing destination.
