Once upon a time there was three crisp flavours – cheese and onion, salt and vinegar and ready salted. If you were down the pub the choice also included pork scratchings and nuts, but apart from that in the world of snacks there wasn’t that much else to choose from.
But times changed and as we sprinted headfirst into the modern era a floodgate of fancy crisp flavours opened and almost overnight the UK turned crisp-i-sophisticated; New flavours came along – Tomato and Basil, Mozzarella, Angus Beef, Chorizo or Ham and Cranberry. You couldn’t go to a wedding or birthday party without being offered a bowl of Chipotle and Goats Cheese or Smoked Haddock and Ice Cream kettle chips.
However, of the new generation of crisps one flavour became a big favourite with me and everyone from Grannies to gamers, that flavour was Sweet Red Chilli.
So I’m really pleased those most regal of cracker makers Ritz have decided (along with Sea Salt & Vinegar, Sea Salt & Pepper and Cream Cheese & Onion) to produce a Sweet Red Chilli flavour ‘Ritz Crisp & Thin’, their brand new oven baked potato snack.
The new crisps have got an original texture and are great on their own or with a some sort of dip too. Ritz are promoting them alongside a re-recording by Gregory Porter of the 1927 Irving Berlin song ‘Putting on the Ritz’ and believe they can bring a touch of glamour and sophistication to celebratory events and festivities.
Whether they can be as sophisticated as old-school ‘Pickled Onion’ is open to debate, but to quote another Berlin classic ‘They Say It’s Wonderful’.
