Once upon a time in the 80’s Atari built the ST computer. What was special about it wasn’t the hardware, it was a piece of software built by Steinberg.

Cubase was a revolutionary midi sequencing tool allowing musicians to create music from their bedrooms without having to spend £1,000’s of pounds on expensive equipment.

It was basic, but it opened the floodgates to a generation of dance music enthusiasts to have a go themselves and the home studio was born.

Things have moved on since then and while Cubase still has it’s loyal fans, the advancement in computer processing power and creative developers meant a whole range of sequencing software has since surfaced onto the market.

Reason, Logic and Garageband, Pro Tools are just some of the more popular names in the industry, together with a Belgium company, Image Line Software.

Image Line Software have be making huge advances in the sequencer marketplace over the past 10 years and when FL Studio 10 was released in March it was greeted by a stereo-panned round of applause from music studios everywhere. It takes making music to fantastic levels of sophistication, but still manages to be easy enough for even novices to work with

When we spoke to French remixer / producer Madeon (see our interview here) and he told us how much he loved it. He is not alone deadmau5, Porter Robinson (see below) and Mike Oldfield are also big fans, and FL Studio is fast becoming THE studio sequencer of choice.
