Life is a beach – Holkham, Norfolk

Holkham, in North Norfolk and it’s surrounding area is such a beautiful and unspoilt part of the world part of me doesn’t want to write this feature in case you go there and ruin it.

Victoria Hotel Holkham

The Victoria Hotel
Perfectly located for exploring this part of the world, the Hotel was bought and completely renovated by Viscount Coke in 2004. There is a warm atmosphere to the place and a lovely sense of the areas history in and around the building. Much of the furniture and ornaments were bought in India by Viscountess Polly Coke and shipped back especially for the hotel, This is one of the places where Maharajah Duleep Singh, the last Sikh ruler of the Sikh Raj would come to go hunting.

That’s not to say it is a snooty place, the staff are especially attentive but are careful to never invade your space, a knack that is not easy to pull off but they managed it superbly.

There is a great bar / lounge area (below) with a big sofas and huge fireplace, ideal for relaxing after a walk back from the beach.

victoria hoklham bar

We had a fantastic dinner in their restaurant too, if you visit try the North Sea Plaice and Crab Risotto it is delicious! As was the Passion Fruit Tart with Mago Jelly and Tropical Fruits.

The Hotel (and another really good one in Wells-Next-The-Sea called The Globe), is owned by Adnams, the Brewer. Needless to say there is a wide selection of their drinks beers at the bar. One thing my partner tried was an Adnams Rosë wine. She loved it, and it’s definitely worth trying if you visit or see it anywhere else.

The hotel has 10 rooms all uniquely decorated and splendidly equipped. We stayed in the Attic room. The bath is so big it takes 20 minutes to fill.
