I don’t know why but Five Guys still seems to me like the new kid on the block when it comes to burger restaurants, but they actually first started out back in Virginia, USA in 1986. The first Five Guys burger to be flipped in Blighty was actually in 2013 in Convent Garden (I know because I went there several times), since then they have grown like crazy and there are now 138 of them in the UK. That is 690 guys in total!
Anyway, I think they are fab and the perfect middle ground between the vastly overpriced ‘gourmet’ burger restaurants and the MC-king chains we all know so well. They are bright fresh and fun. The secret to their success is to keep it simple.
Their menu is small, but what they do, they do well. The burgers taste of actual meat – that might sound like a weird thing to say, but it’s not something to take for granted. Everything is made to order too, it makes a big difference and the food is always fresh tasting (probably because it is). If I do have one tiny complaint it’s that a regular order of fries is huge and a large order is basically enough for 8 people. The spicy fries are great though – Pro tip: order one spicy and one normal fries and mix them up.
The real reason we are here tonight though is not for the burgers, we’re here to taste the brand new Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups milkshake – Available from the 5th of April for a limited period only. What are they like you ask? Well, they taste just as you imagine (and want them to taste) thick, creamy sweet as anything and full of tiny peanut butter pieces too. Be warned you made need 2 paper straws before you get to the bottom and I didn’t bother to ask the calorie count. If you need to count, you can’t have one.
Anyway, they are definitely causing a fuss. Just a poster of the new Reese milkshake was enough to entice more than a few over-excited twenty-somethings through the door while we were there.
