Considering what a huge smash hit Jaws was way back in 1975, it’s actually surprising how few movies have used the sea as a backdrop for terror. Orca, Killer whale springs to mind as a fairly good attempt at capturing the tension of man (or woman) against fish/whale, meanwhile Pirhana, Deep Blue Sea and, cough, Sharknado all tried hard, but pretty much fail miserably.
Enter ‘The Shallows’ featuring Blake Lively (no, not the Blake who went out with Amy Winehouse, the blonde movie star) as a surfer who finds herself on the wrong side of the beach.
The key to the success of Jaws, wasn’t the moments of action, it was the suspense, the quiet, the nails on the blackboard, the calm before the storm. I may be wrong, but ‘The Shallows’ looks like a movie that might amount to more than its CGI.
Starring, Blake Lively, Oscar Jaenada and Sedona Legge, ‘The Shallows’ is set for release on August 12th
