Nichole Gawalis is a photographer based in Los Angeles, California.
She has a website called Lobster Legends and for the last 10 years has been taking photos of her surroundings. I like her pictures because they nearly always allow you to imagine a story to go with them. There is also a rawness to the photographs and some of them remind me of old super 8 film too.
The strange name comes from a trip Nichole took to Las Vegas with a few friends in 2009. “Well I have always liked the ocean and anything nautical really”, “I saw a huge sign outside of a shitty hotel and it said “legendary lobster special”…. for some reason those two words stuck with me, but I changed it a little”.
For those of you interested in the technical side Nichole gave me some information about her equipment.
“I always have a 35 mm film camera on me. I normally shoot with a Canon AE-1 but I also use old 35mm point and shoot cameras or disposables. I also use a Fuji Instax for the instant film photos. All of my photos are taken on film, and no Photoshop is used at all”.
