Leather and Fur: Leading the Runway for Autumn 2013

Leather And Fur - NY Fashion Week

Leather and fur led the Autumn 2013 trends at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York. From the 1970’s inspired collections of Rachel Zoe and Custo Barcelona to the futuristic constructions of Rebecca Minkoff, fur and leather made their conspicuous debut down the runway. In an arrangement of colors, these designers emphasised uses of fur and leather in the assortment of structured fur coats and sophisticated leather jackets. Other designers also integrated the leather and fur trend with trousers, skirts, shawls, and gloves.

Vivienne Tam’s leather-incorporated jackets were rocker-chic, while Azria’s BCBG leather knee high pumps were innovative and sophisticated. Although leather is often affiliated with an edgy appeal, designers like Rachel Zoe exemplified the feminine side. While the assortment of leather pants in black and camel made a smashing impression her ruffled, off-the-shoulder mini dress captured a flair for versatility. Falguni and Shane Peacock collection used leather subtly but very admirably: their black elbow length leather gloves were exquisitely harmonised with the stunning beaded gowns. The leather trim detailing sparingly used in Custo Barcelona’s “Beauty and the Beast” rendition also created precise lines with clever accentuation.

Fur may not be as easy to wear as leather, but designers like Vera Wang and Nicole Miller integrated the trend in a classy, wearable way. With the most elegant and ladylike quality, Vera Wang’s stylish fur capes and wraps graced the runway in beautiful winter white and onyx black. Nicole Miller offered wearable furs in her everyday collection with her handbags, shawls, and fur trimmed sleeved shirt. On the more extravagant side, Brandon Sun, Dennis Basso, and Douglas Hannant explored a more obscure way of featuring fur. Sun’s exaggerated peplum fur top added spunk and class to his ready-to-wear Autumn collection. Basso used a variety of furs including fox and mink in striking hues of blue, golden yellow, and gray. Hannant impressed with his mostly bold clothing and equally noticeable fur dynamic.

The Mercedes Benz NYFW exemplified trendy varieties of leather and fur that can be worn in casual or formal ways. These designers presented us with a modern twist of sensual, traditional material. They showed us how leather can be transferrable to various looks, and how the luxuriousness of fur can be tamed.
